11/25

I chose to highlight the elements of line and shadow used in this photo by making it black and white. Also, I have no portfolio ready black and white photos, so It can widen my breadth section a bit. I like the idea of making it into a cyanotype, so I may try that.

11/4

I used a variety of media including acrylics, pastel, pen, tissue paper and photography to complete this piece. I began by painting a piece of paper to convey my current mindset rather than doing some sort of mind dump of adjectives, as words aren't my favorites. With this, I realized that my pursuit of escapism would be a good trait to portray. Through built up repetitions of the words 'float away' written on tissue paper, I collaged cloudlike building forms at the base of the piece to create weight there. Then I incorporated the self portrait element of the piece with a cut out photgraph I took of myself. I attempted to incorporate emphasis, rhythm and a bit of movement to draw the eye up and away to some extent.

Free Choice
After multiple failed attempts at other projects, I decided it was time to look through past photos I took for either a final, or inspiration for one. In these searches, I found one that I took on a really nice trip to Milwaukee. I loved the colors for whatever reason, and the out of focus effect left me wanting to make use of it in some way. It became a piece about those faint, happy, nostalgic memories that get me by on m darker days.

9/21

My ten pieces i created for our first project helped me progress with idea and concept development in my art. It forced me to come up with more perspectives on the same subject. All in all, the biggest challenge in this project was to simply get all the pieces finished within the time we were given. Having multiple pieces going at the same time helps to get everything done more efficiently, at least for me, because then when working on one certain piece becomes draining you can recharge by working on something else. It's a good thing. Because of my inclination towards stress, procrastination wasn't too bad of a problem for me.
I used all kinds of drawing media, including pencil, charcoal, chalk pastel, oil pastel and ink. I also explored more with collage, continuing from my experience in drawing 2. I realized that I want to have a large range of options for media for future work, so it helped me choose to lean towards the 2D design portfolio.

This weekend I went to Port Washington with Taylor and Joe for a nice little photoshoot, and discovered a new fisheye lens envy.
Fisheye effects on high and low horizon lines create such a cool globelike effect, and make everything look so much more vast than it is in reality.
Who needs complete realism in art anyway? :p

ps. I finally put my insomnia and extra blacklight lightbulbs to use, thank god.

9/5

Rather than going to one art gallery or art show, i ended up going all over the third ward looking for inspiration. The store Hot Pop had a small gallery in the back which i looked at, there were stores selling a lot of cool random things, and a lot of other cool places around milwaukee.

To quote My American Heart, "lately I've been tired and uninspired, lately I've been tired, oh-so tired." I can't really get enough sleep and I'm always on the verge of drifting off into another nap. I'm also searching for that next source of creative drive and inspiration, and hope life will move from its standstill. However, on Sunday we're hopefully taking a trip to see art galleries in Waukesha or the Milwaukee Art Museum. Just getting out of Pewaukee for a while for something other than swimming seems revitalizing.

Right now, pastels are more or less my escape from my throbbing arms and growing tiredness from swim season... blending is so calming.

I've also spent time between practices looking at different film cameras i could use to spice up my portfolio. I'm likin' the Holga 120CFN. Cheap, with some pretty cool effects. and colorflashes.

cute.

I recently read part of this anthology of dream interpretation and dream psychology information. Dreams are a manifestation of our subconscious mind that focus around certain unresolved conflict we have in our lives, and the moods that are set concerning our dream characters and settings are important in their interpretation. As I tried to think about this within the context of my own dreams, I realized the fuziness that I actually have regarding them. The visual effects, senses used, and clarity all differ. Creating pieces which convey the moods and themes within dreams could be a possibility to create some interesting art...

I realize I haven't been keeping up with my blog very well at all... But here I go again after an almost two month lapse in posts.
For the past few days I've mostly just been trying to get back my ability to render realistically. I've been drawing simple objects from around my house, attempting to create their full depth through shadows and shading. Yeah. I guess I'm not particularly conceptually inspired at the moment.

6/22

Well, here's my first post of the summer finally. Somehow, most days have ended up pretty full, despite my lack of schedule. I've been reading, sketching, travelling (a bit), and playing an ungodly amount of pokemon. More or less, my sketches have remained realistic, mostly of my environment at the time. I've tried using more pen to experiment with media i was more wary of, and i guess it's kind of growing on me.
I'd upload my photos of milwaukee and minnesota to flickr, but i don't know where my uploading cords went. My trips to both cities were inspiring. At minnesota i toured the college and the architecture department and decided that it would be a possible career choice for me. A bit of direction is nice.
